“L’AERO MONTGOLFIERE DENOMEE ‘TOUR DE CALAIS’, 1785”

Balloons and ballooning art captured popular imagination in the 18th century and Regency period. The brothers Joseph and Etienne Montgolfier sent up the first manned hot air balloon in September 1783. In December of the same year Professor Charles made the first free voyage in a hydrogen balloon. Hot air balloons became know as Montgolfieres and hydrogen balloons as Charlieres. This colored etching of the balloon “Tour de Calais,” a Roziere design in which Pilatre de Rozier and his companion died in 1785, is one of a set of illustrations for a book titled “Balloons” by the Aeriel Press, 1956, England. Trimmed and framed to 11 x 14 inches.
